The origins of the joystick and its impact on computer games entertainment

Right the way back to the first ever coin operated computer game, Galaxy Game, way back in 1971, the joystick has been integral to video games entertainment. While the game was a variant of the earlier vector display, 1961, Spacewar! Game, it was the first stepping-stone to the invention of the video games arcade. Just two months after the news of Galaxy Game broke, the first commercially available arcade game came out, ingeniously called Computer Space, and the path was laid for the adoption of joysticks into all of our hearts.

However, the joystick itself goes much further back than computer games. Its history lies in aviation, with the first examples going all the way back to the opening decade of the 20th Century. However, with the opportunity to fly a plane fairly narrow for the majority of people, it is the computer game that really brought the joystick alive as a culturally significant development.

The very first video game joystick was invested by one of the founding fathers of video games, Ralph Baer, in 1967. However, one of the most recognizable joysticks in history took a whole ten more years to arrive. The Atari controller build for the 2600 was an instant classic with its simple and easy to use style.

The 1980s saw the might of the NES and Sega Mastersystem take over the home console market, pushing the joystick out of the limelight a little outside of the arcade arena. However, die-hard PC gamers held on, especially with the increasing complexity of flight simulation games.

Perhaps the biggest comeback though for the joystick to the entertainment world was the growth of the fighting game. From the late seventies, through the eighties, fighting games grew in popularity, but in 1991 the genre changed everything with the introduction of Street Fighter 2 and in so doing cemented the joystick firmly back into our hearts and knuckle white clenched fists.

Outside of the fighting and aerial combat genres, joysticks have continued to have some influence on modern computer games, but that influence has been greatly depleted by the takeover of the game pad. This fact flipped in 1996 with the eagerly anticipated Nintendo 64 with it’s much celebrated analogue stick, central joystick style controller. Suddenly the game pad and the joy stick were one on popular computer games. Mario and Sonic haven’t been the same since and to be fair, Call of Duty just wouldn’t be the same without it.

The big question mark in the future of the joystick is whether it can reinvent itself, or establish itself, in the wake of the increasing news of the new era of computer games; the era of motion sensors and games without controllers.
